Turning a landfill-only waste contract into full stream separation
A contract brewery was sending almost everything to landfill, with an organic sludge its council had stopped accepting. Evoro aseparated every stream and found the sludge a sustainable home.
Under its previous provider, a contract brewery was sending effectively all of its waste to landfill at significant cost — and was left stranded when its council refused to keep accepting its organic DAF sludge. Evoro restructured the site's waste entirely, recycling aluminium, glass, plastic and cardboard, and diverting the sludge to a licensed compost facility. General waste to landfill fell to a small fraction of its original volume.

The story

The Situation

A contract brewing business, producing for a number of beverage brands, had a waste problem on two fronts. Under its previous provider, effectively all of its waste was going into general waste and on to landfill at significant cost.

It also produced a DAF waste — an organic sludge — that its council had initially taken but then refused to continue accepting, leaving the business with no sustainable home for the material.

key steps

Our Approach

Evoro won the business and rebuilt the client’s waste management from the ground up. This involved several key steps:

Restructure the site’s waste into distinct streams — aluminium cans, glass bottles, plastic and cardboard — each recycled, leaving only a very small amount of true general waste.

Establish a diversion route for the organic DAF sludge to a licensed compost facility, recovering material that previously had nowhere sustainable to go.

Service the site twice a week, keeping the separated streams flowing and the landfill volume down.

The outcome

The Results

The environmental turnaround is the story. Where previously almost everything went to landfill, full stream separation now sees the aluminium, glass, plastic and cardboard all recycled — cutting general waste to landfill to a small fraction of its original volume.

The organic sludge that previously had nowhere sustainable to go is now diverted to a licensed compost facility and re-lifed rather than buried.

Beyond the cost saving, the client gains a clear sustainability story it can report against — able to demonstrate waste diverted from landfill, which matters more and more to commercial clients under ESG reporting pressure.

Why it matters

Separation is what makes diversion reportable.

Sending one mixed bin to landfill is easy; separating four clean streams and finding a home for a difficult organic sludge is the work. That separation is exactly what lets a commercial client report real landfill diversion — increasingly the thing they’re really buying.
